Representatives from the fishing community of Sakhri-Nate who are opposing the proposed Jaitapur Nuclear Power Plant in Ratnagiri district, will meet party president Uddhav Thackeray at Sena Bhavan on Tuesday to chart the future course of dissent.
In an effort to garner support from the Shiv Sena representatives from the fishing community of Sakhri-Nate who are opposing the proposed Jaitapur Nuclear Power Plant in Ratnagiri district, will meet party president Uddhav Thackeray at Sena Bhavan on Tuesday to chart the future course of dissent.
This is a day after some locals who were opposed to the power plant, decided to come on board with the state following a meeting between industries minister Narayan Rane and representatives of Janhit Seva Samiti, a loca body spearheading the agitation
The Shiv Sena holds the majority in the gram panchayats in the fishing villages of both Sakhr (11 members) and Nate (7 members). Representatives of the fishing community on Saturday also announced their protest on October 13.
“The nuclear power plant wil release hot water in the sea which will affect marine life and biodiversity. Our fish catch will also deplete, thus threatening loss of our livelihood,” said Amjad Borkar of the Machimaar Krut Samiti.
“Our opposition to the plant continues. We are open to support from any political party.”
