The Bombay high court directed the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to increase water supply to buildings, which was reduced to half, following the corporation’s decision to terminate services of private tankers providing water in this area from February 12.

A welfare association of the rehabilitated families had moved the court seeking directions to the BMC to provide them adequate water supply. Counsel for the BMC pointed out that though water supply by tankers had been reduced in view of their policy decision to terminate services of tankers, the tenements were still being provided piped water supply.

The counsel for the residents pointed out that the supply was inadequate and after the reduction in tanker, they were getting just 10 litres of water per day per person.

The division bench of chief justice Mohit Shah and justice SJ Vazifdar also directed the Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) to decide the eligibility of 235 slumdwellers, who had been allotted permanent alternate accommodations though their appeals against holding them ineligible were still pending.
