The Kurla railway police have taken a step forward and started an awareness campaign against stone-pelting menace.

The Kurla railway police have taken a step forward and started an awareness campaign against stone-pelting menace.

The police have roped in non-governmental organisations and schoolchildren to generate awareness among slumdwellers, along the tracks, to curb this menace.

Shivaji Dhumal, senior inspector of Kurla railway police, said, “We will put posters in nearby slums, station premises and schools. We will educate people on the risks and dangers of pelting stones.”

Policemen recently met slumdwellers and informed them that throwing stones at a moving train is a criminal offence and if a person is caught doing it, he can be punished under the law.

As part of this campaign, policemen will also visit schools to inform and educate children about how a stone flung at a moving train can hit a commuter, and seriously injure him.
