In a snub to Chief Minister Ashok Chavan, opposition in both Houses of Maharashtra Legislative today decided to boycott the customary tea party hosted by him on the eve of the monsoon session beginning tomorrow, saying they prefer to confront the government over credible issues.
Addressing a press conference, Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Assembly Eknath Khadse said, "The ruling coalition partners in the government are busy fighting with each other on petty issues and levelling charges against each other."
The opposition leader was referring to Congress spokesman Hussain Dalwai's allegation that the NCP had instigated communal violence in Sangli-Miraj last year.
He said the government has failed on all counts including the case of banning American author James Laine's controversial book on Shivaji and an education scheme, due to which the admissions to junior colleges have been delayed.
Khadse said, "The opposition will tackle the government on the floor aggressively and do not feel the need to meet them for a tea party and hence we have decided to boycott it."
The two-week monsoon session is not adequate to highlight issues concerning common man, he said. "We will have only around six working days during the two weeks period. During the business advisory committee meeting scheduled this Thursday we will demand that this session should have at least 15 working days," he added.
