The police said the accused suspected the victim of having an affair with another man, because of which he stabbed her to death.

An officer from the Deonar police station talking on condition of anonymity as he is not authorised to talk to the media said, “The incident took place on Monday evening, when Julekha Khatun, 25, had come to meet her two children. The children were staying with her estranged husband Salim Akbar Ali Shaikh, 30, at Deonar.”

“As she was going back home, the couple had an argument over an affair Shaikh suspected Khatun of having. Khatun left their house after a heated argument. The accused then followed her till outside the railway station where he stabbed her.”

The officer added, “ Shaikh and Khatun got married 12 years ago and had a son and daughter aged three and eight respectively.”

“ Shaikh was staying separately and would come to meet her children every now and then. The couple would frequently fight about the affair Shaikh suspected Khatun was having.”

“On Monday, however, things turned for the worse and he ended up stabbing Khatun. He then presented himself before the police station,” said the officer.

Senior police inspector TC Bhalerao of Deonar police station said, “Shaikh and Khatun had been having domestic problems over a year. We have arrested Shaikh on the charge of murder. Further investigations are on.”
