At least 15 policemen were injured in the violence at Diva railway station on Friday. Three police vehicles were burnt, and damage to railway property worth several lakhs was reported from Diva.

Government Railway Police (GRP) officials said commuters got on the railway tracks and disrupted both long distance and suburban train services.
With just four GRP constables and a sub-inspector at Diva railway station, the unrest could not be controlled immediately. The lack of a local police station at Diva city compounded the problem. With train services stopped, officials from the closest police station at Mumbra, along with GRP and Railway Protection Force (RPF), had travel to Diva by road, said police officials.
“The mob was so unruly that they set a Thane city police motorbike on fire and dumped it on the railway tracks. Several officers, including inspector Vinod Chavan sustained a fracture in the pelting,” said Rupali Ambure, deputy commissioner of police, GRP.
