The Mumbai police have rubbished rumors doing rounds at several suburban pockets in the city where people are living in fear of a gang or a ‘monkey man’ that is kidnapping children and raping women before consuming them.

“There is no such gang or monkey man in the city. We request people not to panic as the city and its residents are safe,” said Nisar Tamboli, Mumbai police spokesperson.
The rumors are so widespread that some schools have told parents not to allow their children to come or leave the school alone.
While some say there is a monkey man who jumps into the house from the rooftop, rapes women and then feeds on them, others say that there is a gang that applies grease on the body and kidnaps children. These rumors have been doing rounds in areas like Chembur, Andheri, Kandivli, Kurla, Mulund Bhandup and Ghatkopar.
“There are also some misleading videos on some networking websites, but, surprisingly, nobody has seen either the monkey man or the gang till now,” stated Tamboli. The rumours had started in Kurar where three children went missing, but were later found in their homes.
