Supreme Court rejects MP Patil’s bail plea

The Supreme Court on Thursday rejected the anticipatory bail application filed by suspended NCP leader Padmasinh Patil in connection with a police complaint filed by social activist Anna Hazare.

Hazare had filed a complaint with Parner police in Ahmednagar saying Patil had conspired to kill him and alleged that he faced a threat to his life from Patil.

Hazare had also said that one of the accused in the Pawanraje Nimbalkar murder case, Parasmal Jain, had, in his statement, said Patil offered him a supari (contract) to kill Hazare.

“No ground is made out for grant of anticipatory bail to the petitioner. The special leave petition is dismissed accordingly,” the bench of Justice D K Jain, Justice Mukundakam Sharma and Justice R M Lodha observed.

Patil had approached the Supreme Court after the Aurangabad bench of the Bombay High Court rejected his anticipatory bail plea, observing that prima facie, there was evidence against him in the case.

The Supreme Court also directed Patil to surrender within a week. “However, we direct that if the petitioner (Patil) surrenders within a week and applies for regular bail, his prayer shall be considered as expeditiously as possible.”
