When Saleem Beg took on the task of heading heritage conservation work in Kashmir in 2004, he knew he was dealing with a land condemned as a den of conflict.

After six years in the restoration and preservation of Kashmir’s arts and monuments, Beg is in Mumbai to show there is a lot more to the Valley than bloodshed and political unrest. “No place should be condemned simply because it generates bad news,” said Beg, the convener of the Jammu & Kashmir chapter of Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage which has been documenting, Kashmiri arts, crafts and architecture. On Wednesday, he will give a public lecture in the city.
(Lecture on ‘Cultural Resources of Kashmir – Mapping and Conservation’, on April 7, at 6.30 pm at Jnanapravaha, Fort)
