The JJ Marg police informed the Esplanade metropolitan magistrate’s court on Sunday.

Shaikh, according to the police, lived in different parts of Mumbai using fake nationality documents.

The police told the court that following this discovery, Shaikh had been booked under the Passport Act and Foreigners Act.

The court has remanded Shaikh in judicial custody until December 26.

“Initially Shaikh had said that he is from West Bengal but when our team went there, they the failed to trace his address. Later he confessed that he is from Dhaka,” said Chering Dorjee, deputy commissioner of police (zone I). With the application of sections of Foreigners Act, the chances of Shaikh’s conviction are high, Dorjee added.

Shaikh’s wrongdoings were exposed after an 18-year-old victim informed the police about the trauma she and her sisters had gone through for the last two years.

Shaikh also convinced the girls’ mothers that he could prevent any possible complications during their future pregnancy.

When asked if the police have been able to locate the places where the girls underwent abortion, Dorjee said the victims’ family are hesitant to cooperate.
