The LT Marg police have formed two teams to probe into the Rs 5-crore robbery from a jewellery shop in Zaveri Bazaar near Mumba Devi Temple. These two teams will search for accused Paresh Rawal, 26, in Maharashtra and Rajasthan.
“We have formed two special teams. One team will search for Rawal in Maharashtra while the other will look for him in Rajasthan,” said Shrikant Desai, police inspector.
He said the police are working on many leads but refused to divulge any details saying that it will hamper their investigations. The police on Thursday had registered a case of theft against Rawal who has been working at Devikripa Jewellers for 10 months.
A police team went to Pune to question his mother and sister, who stay there. “Rawal's mother and sister said they don't know anything about him and he has not visited them for past several months,” said a police officer, requesting condition.
Police sources said they also questioned Rawal's cousin Lalit, who used to stay with Rawal in Navi Mumbai. “Lalit also does not seem to know Rawal's whereabouts,” said a police officer, requesting anonymity.
Rawal, who was assigned the job of transporting gold from Delhi to Mumbai, left for Delhi on December 5 and returned next day with 23 kg of gold and went to his employer Nathlal Gandhi. Gandhi asked Rawal to wait for some time and he stepped out. When he returned, he did not find Rawal. A case under section 381 (theft by clerk or servant of property in possession of master) of the Indian Penal Code had been registered against Rawal.
