Music composer AR Rahman loves doing live shows. It is his way of “connecting with his fans” and making them fall in love with his music all over again. The 50-year-old maestro will soon embark on a city tour (New Delhi, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, and Mumbai) to celebrate completing 25 years in the industry.
“It’s a great experience when you are performing live. You get to present the same music that your fans have heard on radio, or through CDs, live on the stage. So, there is an effort from our side to make it even better. It is a unique way of connecting with the fans, and you see them falling in love with your music all over again,” says Rahman.
However, before the Oscar-winning composer starts the tour, he will perform a sufi concert in the Capital — thanks to his never dying love for the genre.
“Whenever I have performed at big concerts, I’ve always had this sufi section. But then, it used to be only a few songs, so performing them as a part of a separate concert didn’t make sense. But now, there are enough numbers to organise a concert, and I love playing sufi music,” Rahman tells us.
Despite his love for live shows, this will be the composer’s first live performance in India in five years. “The idea is to bring some new and fresh music for concerts. You can’t be living in the past forever, and you can’t be playing the same songs over and over again. So, I was building a new set list over these five years. Apart from that, there were several work commitments that I had to cater to, and I was unable to do live shows in the country,” he says.
