If the obstacles that Prakash Jha’s Raajneeti faced at the Central Board of Film Certification are any indication, then the going won’t be any easy for Vishal Bhardwaj’s under-production film, Saat Khoon Maaf. Reason: lyricist Gulzar’s lyrics in two of the film’s songs have lines about the controversial Babri Masjid.
According to an industry source, before Gulzar narrated the first song to Bhardwaj, he informed him about the relevance of those lines in the song. Bhardwaj agreed with his point of view and kept it under consideration while hearing the lyrics. “He didn’t ask Gulzar saab to make any changes to the song. The lines are relevant even in the second song too otherwise Gulzar saab wouldn’t have penned them for even one song,” adds our source on the condition of anonymity.
The songs in question feature at mushaira (poetry session) sequences in the movie which Irrfan Khan’s character frequents. “Irrfan, who plays one of Priyanka’s husbands, is the poetic kind or a patron of shayari. He’s shown to be the kind of person who has an affinity towards mushairas. So, these two songs fit into the storyline beautifully,” informs our source.
It seems, however, that the filmmaker and the lyricist are prepared for the consequences if the Censor Board refuses to clear the songs with the lines referring to the Babri Masjid, located at the Ram Janmabhoomi in Uttar Pradesh.

{{/usCountry}}“They’re not making alterations as of now. Gulzar saab and Vishal have already discussed the censorship issue and are willing to make changes in the lyrics, but only as the last resort. That’s only if they’re referred to the Revising Committee and the members decline to pass the lines, after which they will appeal before the Appellate Tribunal. Till then, they’re not worrying.”
Reportedly, the movie’s story revolves around Priyanka Chopra who kills all her seven husbands after marrying them, one by one. “That’s a manifestation of a kind of incompleteness in her character’s childhood. And it comes to the fore later, which is why she kills the man she marries,” reveals our source. We tried contacting the director, but he didn’t revert to our text messages.
