Women-centric YouTube channel Girliyapa has taken on the rising “moral police”, who dish out advice to women on how they ought to behave, dress, sit, talk or simply live, by giving an interesting twist to rapper Badshah’s latest anthem Mercy.

From Dangal actress Fatima Sana Shaikh being slammed for “dressing inappropriately” in the holy month of Ramadan, to Priyanka Chopra being called out for flashing her legs during her meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, women’s bodies have been a target for people’s judgment and ire.

In a song Controversy Ho Gayi, Maanvi Gagroo and Sanaya Pithawalla attack the trolls who slut-shame women, admonishing them for being skinny or fat to wearing “inappropriate” clothes.

But “she won’t give a damn,” says Gagroo, who shot to fame with the web series Pitchers, in the video.

The spoof also derides the original Mercy song, which has been criticised for its sexist overtones.

In less than five days since the video was released, it has been viewed over 27,000 times and women from across the country have commented sharing their agreement to the song’s lyrics.

“I legit feel we spend so much money on a bra and spend an equally obscene amount of time hiding it,” commented user alena198318.

Another user thought that this version is better than the original.
