The music of the British pop group the Spice Girls is set for a comeback in a musical version of their phenomenal success during the 1990s, by the creator of Mamma Mia!, the show of ABBA's hits.
The songs of Sporty, Scary, Posh, Ginger and Baby Spice will return to the London stage in a new musical on December 11, to be called Viva Forever!
The five singers -- Victoria Beckham (née Adams), Melanie Brown, Emma Bunton, Melanie Chisholm and Geri Halliwell -- became the best-selling female group, with 75 million albums sold worldwide after their debut in 1996, reaching No. 1 in more than 30 countries with the song Wannabe.
The play will not just be a Spicemania-like musical tribute to the girl group, according to the Los Angeles Times. The show's producer Judy Craymer brought aboard the writer and actor Jennifer Saunders (Absolutely Fabulous) to the project, so it should have a good sense of humor.
The story follows the idea of an American Idol-type singing contest, a young woman with a chaotic home life who attempts to resolve her feelings about adoption, learning to believe in herself and about friendship and "girl power."

"It isn't just an excuse to put the Spice Girls' songs on stage," Craymer stated. "It's a beautiful story, properly told. Whether you like the Spice Girls or not you will love these songs within a musical."
