After cloudburst, Uttarakhand counts the dead

DEHRADUN: As heavy rains continued to lash the hilly areas of Uttarakhand 15 dead bodies were recovered in Pithoragarh and Chamoli districts from cloud burst hit villages where almost 38 people were stated to be buried under debris on Friday Morning.
As per information provided by state disaster management department nearly 100 personnel from NDRF, SDRF, Local police and other volunteers were carrying out the rescue and search operation at Bastari, 65 kilometers and Naulada, 55 kilometers from Pithoragarh district headquarters. Four dead bodies were recovered from two villages in Pithoragarh and three others from ghat tehsil in Chamoli district by Saturday afternoon. Eight bodies were recovered on Friday.
Department officials have said that 23 persons are still missing from these areas and are believed to be buried under the debris.
“Rescue and search operation is still on at disaster struck villages of Pithoragarh and Chamoli. Almora based 40 member unit of NDRF and 25 member SDRF team from Dharchula along with local police and disaster management department trained response local teams are engaged in rescue operations. While Inclement weather condition still prevailing in all affected areas search operation will continue” informed Shailesh Bagoli, secretary state disaster management department.
Bagoli added that Chardham pilgrims have been moved to safer locations.
“District administrations of Chardham routes have been directed by the government to take due care of the pilgrims where ever they are. So far there is no report of stranded pilgrims along Chardham routes” stated Bagoli.
Disaster hit the two villages in Pithoragarh after almost 12 hours of incessant rainfall since 9 pm on Thursday triggering bursts.
Several houses were submerged under the flowing muck rendering many persons missing.
