NEW DELHI: The government will extend the pilot project of installing hi-tech equipment, such as acoustic sensors, along the Indo-Pak border from Jammu to Gujarat to cover the entire 3,000-km border.
According to the country’s law enforcement agencies, attacks in Punjab’ s Dinanagar and Pathankot were carried out by gunmen who came from across the border.
Following the attacks, a pilot project was launched at two places — in Bhuj of Gujarat and Gurdaspur in Punjab — by installing fiber-optic distributed acoustic sensing system that can detect even very minor movement on the ground. It can detect digging as well to check cross-border tunnels. The system uses simple fiber-optic communications cables, buried underground, as sensor.
The system works in synergy with other gadgets like close circuit cameras, night vision equipment, radars and thermal imagers for comprehensive border guarding.
“The government has agreed in-principle to extend the pilot project for the whole Indo-Pak border,” said minister of state for home, Kiren Rijiju.
The government had formed a committee under former Union home secretary Madhukar Gupta for a comprehensive review of security at the Indo-Pak border. The committee has submitted its report and the government is reviewing it.
