KOLKATA: A month after her May 19 massive win in the Bengal assembly elections, chief minister Mamata Banerjee made her Delhi dreams clear on Saturday urging party leaders and workers to pave the way for serving the people from the national capital.

“We have to spread the roots of the Trinamool Congress to Delhi. You have to take us to a position where we can serve the people from Delhi,” she said. “Under the leadership of Mamata Banerjee TMC will emerge as a powerful force in Delhi in 2019 Lok Sabha elections,” said Lok Sabha MP and her nephew Abhisekh Banerjee.

Incidentally, Mamata Banerjee has taken quite a few shots at an elusive Federal Front, the proposition of which was maintaining equal distance from BJP and Congress. On May 19 when they came to Mamata Banerjee’s swearing-in ceremony in Kolkata, RJD chief Lalu Prasad and National Conference leader Farooq Abdullah dropped hints of another initiative to form a Federal Front.

“All like-minded parties will sit together to resist the spread of BJP. If we don’t come together now, BJP and RSS will end up dividing the country,” Lalu had said at Mamata’s swearing-in.

Potential leaders of the front, Bihar CM Nitish Kumar, Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal, UP CM Akhilesh Yadav and DMK chief M Karunanidhi’s daughter, Kanimozhi was also present.

However, at her swearing-in, Mamata said she was too tied up in Bengal. “The Federal Front is a good idea. I will be happy to help. But I don’t want anything as I am too tied up in Bengal.”

In 2012 and 2013 too, the TMC chief took initiatives to galvanise an elusive new front.

The renewed quest by the leader comes at a time when her political career is at an all-time high.
