The experiment started Saturday at the three stations --- Kasna, Knowledge Park and Surajpur. The initiative will provide relief to the overburdened staff as they will get a day off every 10 days, or three offs a month.

“The initiative was launched on the directions of the UP director general of police. We already are short-staffed and, hence, it will be difficult for us to give personnel four offs a month. So we decided to give them an off every 10 days,” said Abhishek Yadav, superintendent of police (rural), Gautam Budh Nagar.

Officials said by next month, all 13 police stations in Greater Noida will have the system in place. Currently, these 13 police stations have nearly 400 personnel in its ranks.

The off scheme was first started in the state on a trial basis in Gomtinagar police station, Lucknow, in May 2013. Buoyed by the results, the police brass decided to implement it across the state.

Mutha Ashok Jain, inspector general (public grievance, law & order), said, “The personnel do not have a weekly off. But they get 30 casual leaves a year and a month’s extra salary. This is for all non-gazetted ranks”.

He said all non-gazetted personnel also get 30 days’ privilege leave and a year’s medical leave for the entire service period.

A similar initiative was started in Agra a couple of days ago for sub-inspectors. The concept was initiated in the Hariparvat circle that has three police stations.
