Residents of Express View Apartments in Sector 93 have resorted to posting memes on social media websites to draw the attention of the Noida authority to a collapsed wall surrounding their residential society.

The wall crumbled allegedly due to the presence of water beneath the ground that had flown from a nearby pond.

A meme refers to an image used on social media websites with text or picture of a renowned celebrity or artist for comic relief. In the past, Bangalore Police had used memes to spread awareness on road safety, which was seen as an effective means to connect with the younger generations.

Among the memes addressed by residents to the authority, seeking wall repair, are those including pictures of celebrities and actors such as Amitabh Bachchan, Akshay Kumar and Amjad Khan from their iconic movies and shows.

Members of the residents’ welfare association (RWA) of Express View Apartments said they have resorted to posting memes as the wall is yet to be repaired one and a half years after it crumbled, allegedly due to the presence of water beneath the ground that had flown from a nearby pond.

The group housing society was constructed in 2000 and a total of 3,000 people reside in the 800-odd flats. The society is located near the Noida-Greater Noida Expressway and is adjacent to Gheja village.

Residents said that the lack of boundary wall poses a security threat. “There is no means to check entry of people into our sector since there is no boundary wall. It is a security concern and the authority must address the issue immediately,” said Tanmay Shankar, vice-president, RWA, Express View Apartments, Sector 93, Noida.

“In the last week, we had caught a thief inside our society. However, more than theft, we are worried about the safety of our children. Many children play outside in the evening hours,” said Tripathi.

Residents said that they will keep using memes on social media until the authority takes notice of the problem and provides a permanent solution.

Speaking to Hindustan Times, senior project engineer, Sandip Chandra, of the Noida authority said that the authority has taken cognizance of the issue and it will be resolved soon.

“We have taken up this issue; it’s in the tender process and soon, reconstruction of the dilapidated wall will begin. After completion of the tendering process, the reconstruction will be done within a month,” said Chandra.
