The police said the suspects, who are not linked to one another and are residents of different villages, have been absconding for the last two to three years.

Those arrested have been identified as Insad, Dinesh, Dilshad, Mahesh, Amit, Raju and Vinod, all aged between 25 and 40 years. The police said these seven persons were committing crimes in the area despite the police being on a lookout for them and non-bailable warrants issued against them.

The police said that over the last week, they have been conducting raids at various places after receiving complaints of extortion from various people, mostly traders.

“We launched a hunt after we came to know that these criminals have become active in the area. We caught hold of them from their homes during raids on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday,” said Farmood Ali Pundir, station house officer (SHO), Dankaur police station.

“However, the businessman, upon continuing to receive threats, lodged a complaint and we started the investigation,” Ali said.

Police said Dilshad, another accused, is alleged to have thrashed a public servant in Dankaur last year for his ‘intervention’ in a land dispute case.

“The seven people have been involved crimes such as murder, extortion and attempt to murder, to name a few. They have been named in at least one FIR each. Their activities had started recently and they are not linked to each other, as they worked individually,” Ali said.

The seven have been sent to judicial custody, the police said.
