PV Sindhu targets Hong Kong Open after success in China Open badminton
PV Sindhu will be targeting greater glory in the Hong Kong Open series after winning her maiden Super Series title during the China Open badminton tournament.
A first Super Series title under her belt, PV Sindhu will look to notch up another when she takes the court at the Hong Kong Open. The 21-year-old, who won the China Open on Sunday, will look to put on a good show at the USD 400,000 event which gets underway on Tuesday.
How PV Sindhu won the China Open, her first Super Series title
A solid run in Hong Kong from Sindhu can pave the way to the Dubai World Super Series Finals. Her Dubai Destination ranking of 14 means she is currently out of contention for the $1,000,000 event. But a Super Series title this week will fetch her 9,200 points and could take her points total (27,490) ahead of compatriot Saina Nehwal (35,420) who is currently eighth in the rankings.
The Rio Olympic silver-medallist crashed out in the first round of the tournament last year against familiar foe Carolina Marin. The World No. 1 again bested her in the Olympic final in August and Sindhu would look to set the record straight if she runs into the Spaniard this week.
While Sindhu will open her campaign against Indonesia’s Lindaweni Fanetri, Saina, who has recently recovered from a knee injury, will face familiar foe Thailand’s Porntip Buranaprasertsuk, who had beaten her in the opening round at China Open last week.
