The Court of Arbitration for Sport on Thursday rejected an appeal by the Russian Olympic Committee and 68 athletes against the ruling of world athletics governing body, IAAF, to ban the nation’s track and field team for the Rio Games.
The punishment came over an investigation into allegations of state-sponsored doping in Russia.
Some of Russia’s big track and field stars who are set to miss out following the CAS ruling:
Yelena Isinbayeva: The finest women pole vaulter ever, the 34-year-old double Olympic champion (2004 and 2008) was hoping to sign off with a third title in Rio. She had also won an Olympic bronze, at the 2012 London Games. Isinbayeva is also a triple world champion and has won four world indoor titles.
Mariya Kuchina – The 23-year-old high jumper who won gold at the 2015 world championships and the 2014 world indoor championships besides a silver at the 2014 European championships. Kuchina is seen as the future of Russian athletics.
Sergey Shubenkov:The 25-year-old nicknamed the Siberian sensation is the reigning world 110m hurdles champion. He won the title at the 2015 championships held in Russia. Shubenkov is also twice European champion and is among the strong contenders for gold at Rio.

{{/usCountry}}Ivan Ukhov --- The 30-year-old, who won the high jump gold at the 2012 London Olympics clearing 2.38m, the second best jump ever in Olympics. Vastly experienced, Ukhov is also the 2010 world indoor champion.
Danil Lysenko --- The 19-year-old high jumper has a personal best of 2.24m.
