As the country prepares for the Commonwealth Games, the Society of Indian Law Firms (SILF) is organising the first ever ‘Sports Law Conference’ here to deliberate on various issues related to sports and law in India.
Union Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal will inaugurate the two-day conference on July 24, SILF president Lalit Bhasin said, adding Punjab and Haryana High Court Chief Justice Mukul Mudgal will address the valedictory session on July 25.
With the Commonwealth Games on the horizon, the recent Indian Premier League (IPL) controversy, broadcasting rights, advertising, marketing of goods etc.
Also, the conference will also discuss the ‘Right to Information’ (RTI) and accountability of sports federations, legalities involved in staging major sports events like the Olympics, Asian Games, Commonwealth Games are among the issues to be discussed by lawyers, senior government officials and sports journalists, Bhasin said.
“Organised before the Commonwealth Games, the conference would discuss ways and means of streamlining the laws related to the different aspects of Sports.
Furthermore, it would also discuss gender discrimination in sports, intellectual property rights, importance of transparency in corporate structure of professional sports leagues, future of IPL, besides public relation opportunities and challenges which are concomitant with it, issues relating to infrastructure in developing and maintaining stadiums, training facilities etc., Bhasin told reporters.

{{/usCountry}}“Sports in India is an extremely vast area and entails lots of legal issues, yet laws related to sports are neither clear nor transparent.
India is hosting the Commonwealth Games for the first time and legal issues related to infrastructure, sponsorship, licensing, doping, etc are likely to confront us,” he said.
