Photos: Shinzo Abe and Modi launch Bullet train project in Gujarat

Prime Minister Narendra Modi greeted his Japanese counterpart Shinzo Abe with a hug in Ahmedabad. The duo has inaugurated the much awaited India's first bullet train project. The two have met ten times over the past three years and this visit is expected to further strengthen ties between India and Japan.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe arrived in Ahmedabad yesterday afternoon on a two-day visit to attend his fourth India-Japan annual summit meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. PM and his Japanese counterpart inaugurated India’s first bullet train, the high speed rail project this morning in Ahmedabad. The trio took a tour of Sidi Saiyyed Mosque, the famous 16th century mosque where PM Modi described them about its rich heritage and architecture. (PTI)

Prime Minister Narendra Modi went to Sardar Vallabhbhai International airport to receive his Japanese counterpart. PM Abe was welcomed with ceremonial reception on his arrival at the airport and was presented a guard of honour. Abe’s aircraft had the tricolour along with the Japanese flag. (PTI)

Taking a cue from Japan and its bullet train network, Gujarat will see the foundation stone of the Ahmedabad-Mumbai bullet train laid by the two heads of state at the Sabarmati Athletic Grounds. In the run up to the Gujarat elections, this visit comes as an assertion of Japan’s interest in India. It ranks the third highest in cumulative FDIs (Foreign Direct Investment) to India and according to officials, 15 more Japanese firms have committed to invest in Gujarat this time and the MoUs (Memorandum of Understanding) will be signed during the Modi-Abe summit. Japan has remained a key strategic partner for India. The two countries are also part of the trilateral Malabar naval exercise held with the US annually. Efforts are on to expand the cooperation into joint defence production. (PTI)
