Rongali Bihu, also known as Bohag Bihu or Xaat Bihu, is celebrated in mid-April (April 14-15) to mark the beginning of the Assamese New Year and also to welcome the spring season. It also celebrates the commencement of the harvesting season. Here's how the people of Assam celebrate the seven-day-long festival: (PTI)

The first day of the festival is known as Goru Bihu and it is dedicated to cattle and farm animals. In rural Assam, these animals are taken to a pond and given a bath with a paste made of turmeric and black gram. (AP)

The second day is known as Manuh (human) Bihu. On this day, people wear new clothes and visit their relatives to exchange greetings and seek blessings from the elders. (Pixabay)
