Mentally ill man allegedly stabs mother in eyes in Chinchwad

The man was identified as Bhupendra Vijay Sawant, 35, who is undergoing treatment at Yerawada mental asylum, according to the police. He was at home for a few days when he stabbed his mother, Suman Sawant, 75, in both her eyes. The incident took place on Saturday night.

The police are on a lookout or a man from Chinchwad for stabbing his mother in the eyes. The man was identified as Bhupendra Vijay Sawant, 35, who is undergoing treatment at Yerawada mental asylum, according to the police. "The family's relatives had told us that they will come and file a formal complaint in the matter. However, they have not turned up yet. If they do not file a complaint, we will take the investigation ahead (and take suo motu action)," said police sub-inspector Dighe of Chinchwad police sation. "We will refer the matter to our seniors and decide the further course of action," he added.

Sawant has not returned home since Saturday night, he said. His mother was alone with him in the house when the incident happened. "The mother has told us that he did it," PSI Dighe said.

While the 75-year-old is a retired public servant and earns a meagre pension, her husband works as a painter, the police said. Suman Sawant could not understand what was happening until the neighbours found her bleeding from the eyes and took her to the hospital.

She is undergoing treatment at Yashwantrao Chavan Memorial (YCM) hospital while the police are on a lookout for Sawant.
