Triple talaaq petitioner Shayara Bano has called for the Muslim community to embrace open thinking and shun rigidity, which according to her will bring about a complete transformation in the community’s growth in the country.
Bano was talking to reporters on Monday at the Rashtra Seva Dal office after she was felicitated by Muslim Satyashodhak Mandal, a reformist organisation founded by late social reformer Hamid Dalwai.
Referring to the much-needed change in thought process, she said, “Muslim community needs to adopt new thinking and become open minded, instead of remaining judgemental and rigid. A change is desperately needed for the healthy growth of the community, society and nation,” she said.
Welcoming the Supreme Court decision on triple talaaq, Bano added that the Muslim community was resistant in accepting the decision of the apex court and many consider her to be out of faith, alleging that she has violated Shariah and gone against the religion. “This judgement will benefit generations to come the most, as they will have new ideas and ways of interpreting things, rather than sticking to orthodoxy,” she added.
Muslim Satyashodhak Mandal president Shamshuddin Tamboli said that the mandal will continue with its activities of bringing about the pending reform in the mindset of the community through innovative social programmes. “Liberal thought process is the way forward for the community and Shayara Bano is an example of grit and determination to fight for her rights,” he added.

{{/usCountry}}Bano was divorced by her husband Rizwan Ahmed, by pronouncing the word talaaq thrice through a letter sent to her when she was visiting her family on October 15, 2015. She is a resident of Uttarakhand’s Hempur Daya in Kashipur, who later filed a petition against triple talaaq, halala and polygamy in the Supreme Court on February 23, 2016.
Rizwan, an Allahabad-based property dealer, took away her two kids Irfan, 13, and Muskan, 11, after the divorce due to which Shayara suffered from chronic depression for a long time. She also alleged that her in-laws also forced her to undergo abortion six times with the intention of murder.
