In a bid to make passports more accessible to people from rural areas and to ease the processing of passport applications, the Pune passport office will soon be opening two new passport offices at Latur and Jalna. Earlier, residents of Latur and Jalna had to travel almost 360 kilometres and 300 kilometres, respectively, to the Pune passport office for a passport.
Though it has not been declared when the offices will open, officials concerned said the new facility can come into effect in three months.
“We are committed towards providing good and easily accessible infrastructure to people. Setting up two new offices in Latur and Jalna is a step in that direction. Currently, we are in the initial stage of setting up the new offices. However, our aim is to complete the work as early as possible and we are working on a fast track basis accordingly,” said a senior official from the Pune passport office.
Latur police inspector Ak Chormale said, “Earlier, residents of Latur had to visit the Nagpur passport office to apply for a passport. It was later changed to Pune and Solapur. However, both the places are too far and is not easily accessible to residents of Latur. The new office coming up in Latur would certainly be helpful to everyone and would also increase the number of people applying for passports.”

{{/usCountry}}Apart from the six districts which Pune regional passport office had under its jurisdiction; namely Pune, Ahmednagar, Solapur, Satara, Sangli and Kolhapur; the new additions are Latur, Osmanabad, Nanded, Parbhani, Jalna and Beed.
Further, hand-held electronic tablets will be used by police personnel for address verification of passport applicants in Jalna and Latur. Latur police department have already upgraded to the tab system of police verification. The tablet will use an app called ‘Passport Police’ developed by the ministry of external affairs for address verification.
