Pune Congress leader, woman held for abetment to suicide

The two were arrested after the complainant tried to commit suicide by drinking insect poison in his residence in Guruwar Peth area of Pune on Saturday.

Vinay Dhere, a Congress leader from Pune, and a woman were arrested on Monday in a case of abetment to suicide of a man. Police said the complainant, who survived the suicide bid, is the husband of the arrested woman. Dhere is the Congress Pune unit general secretary.

The duo was sent to Faraskhana police station lock up and a local court remanded them in seven-day police custody, according to Rajendra Mokashe, senior police inspector of Khadak police station. Police sub inspector SL Chaudhary is investigating the case.

The two were arrested after the complainant tried to commit suicide by drinking insect poison in his residence in Guruwar Peth area of Pune on Saturday, and was rushed to a private hospital in Hadapsar where he is undergoing treatment.

Dhere and the woman have been in an extramarital affair since 2012 and were seen talking to each other on multiple occasions, according to the Khadak police. The complaint states that fed up of the illicit love affair, the man took the extreme step on October 11.

A case under Indian Penal Code Sections 306 (abetment to suicide), 511 (attempting to commit offences punishable with imprisonment for life or other imprisonment), 452 (house-trespass after preparation for hurt, assault or wrongful restraint), 497 (adultery), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace), 506(1) for criminal intimidation and 34 (multiple people working for furtherance of common intention) was registered at Khadak police station against the two.
