Pune: Dy SP, 5 IRB staffers arrested for demanding bribe from officers to be relieved of duty to play sports

All the IRB men arrested are affiliated to the State reserve police force (SRPF). The six accused allegedly demanded Rs 5,000 each from sportspersons within their ranks, to be relieved of official duty to play their respective sports.

On Tuesday afternoon, the Anti-corruption bureau (ACB) , Kolhapur unit, arrested six Indian Reserve Battalion (IRB) personnel, including a deputy superintendent, on charges of accepting a bribe of Rs 25,000.

All the IRB men arrested are affiliated to the State reserve police force (SRPF).

According to Sandip Diwan, superintendent of police (SP), ACB, the six accused allegedly demanded Rs 5,000 each from sportspersons within their ranks, to be relieved of official duty to play their respective sports. Besides the DySP , the other accused include an inspector, a head clerk and three other IRB personnel

“ The sportspersons wanted to relieve themselves from bandobast duties and opted to pay a bribe to their seniors,” ACP Diwan said.

According to Diwan, eight out of 21 sportspersons involved in the case agreed to pay the amount and deposited an advance of Rs 25,000, out of Rs 40,000, in the account of a citizen outside the force who is connected with the DySP.

“A corruption complaint was lodged with us following which action was taken and the accused were arrested,” ACP Diwan said.

The DySP has only been identified by his last name - Gawai; as has the inspector - Sakat. The head clerk and three IRB staffers have not yet been identified.

The ACB has evoked relevant sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act against government servants and a probe is being conducted under the supervision of SP Diwan.
