Bengaluru delivery boy abused in Hindi by girls, beaten by male friends; incident caught on cam

A delivery boy in Bengaluru allegedly faced an unwarranted attack in early hours of Saturday when he was verbally abused by a group of girls and then beaten up by their male friends. 25-year-old Basavaraj, who works for quick commerce delivery app Zepto, was returning after delivering an order around 4.40 am when the girls allegedly began abusing him in Hindi.
The victim, who is pursuing his education alongside his delivery job, was on his way from 4th Phase in Yelahanka New Town to Santhosh Nagar after making a delivery.
According to the FIR, cited by news agency PTI, some girls hurled abuses at him, provoking a response. He confronted them and said he did not understand Hindi. He further asked them to explain in Kannada why they were abusing him.

The girls allegedly pulled his cap and tried to attack him, following which he dialled police helpline 112 and also called up one his acquaintances named Ashok.

The accused then called their male friends to the spot and the group assaulted Basavaraj physically, also using a wooden stick found on the road. The victim, who was hit on his back, head and nose, suffered bleeding injuries, the FIR said.
When Basavraj's friend Ashok arrived and tried to intervene, he too was attacked on his head. The group of miscreants continued to use uncouth language. The FIR further revealed that the attackers issued threats that the two victims will not be spared.
The Yelahanka New Town Police Station has registered a case against unidentified persons under Sections 118 , 126 , 351 , 352 and 3 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

Bengaluru has previously also reported incidents of language-related aggression with clashes between Hindi and Kannada speaking people. In one of the cases, which gained national attention last year, a State Bank of India (SBI) employee was seen refusing to communicate in Kannada with a customer and insisted on speaking in Hindi. The incident, which went viral, sparked an online debate over linguistic respect.
In January this year, a warden at an engineering college hostel in Karnataka was dismissed after he was seen instructing students not to speak Kannada on campus.
