Work on the proposed garbage processing plant at Ramtekdi began on Tuesday, with construction of the compound wall of the site getting underway with police protection.
The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has remained resolute in its decision to build the plant at Ramtekdi, despite fierce opposition from the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and the Shiv Sena.
The NCP called a meeting of Ramtekdi residents on Wednesday evening, attempting to build momentum in terms of opposition to the project. A committee, called the Ramtekdi Kachra Plant Hatav Samiti, has been formed. Besides the ruling BJP, members from all major political parties were present at the meeting.
NCP’s Yogesh Sasane and former Shiv Sena MLA Mahadev Babar have even tried to stop any work from beginning at the site, then raising the issue at the PMC general body meeting.
The police have issued a notice to Sasane and other political involved, for trying to stop the work.
The PMC has proposed a 300 metric tonne per day capacity garbage processing plant at Ramtekdi. PMC awarded the contract to Pune Bio Energy Systems, which is now carrying out the work on the ground. Despite all the opposition, Pune Bio Energy Systems has gone ahead and started work at the site.
When the NCP members raised the issue at the PMC general body meeting, Mayor Mukta Tilak had instructed the administration at the time to stop work temporarily. She also assured the NCP that she would discuss the matter with the police commissioner, as regards the withdrawing of notices sent to members. The PMC has underlined that this project is important for the city and that it has taken all the necessary permissions before awarding the contract to the concerned company.
