Raksha Bandhan was celebrated at the Paraplegic Rehabilitation Centre (PRC) for armed forces, Khadki, on Saturday. Former military men sat in a semicircular formation as children and adults showered them with coloured rakhis, sweets and gifts.

“We spoke to everyone. We cannot even imagine how brave these soldiers are. We knew where we were coming, but we had no idea it will be such an inspiring experience,” said Gauri Avsare, a Class 11 commerce stream student from Abhinav Education Society’s Junior College, Ambegaon.

When asked if he enjoyed the civilian visits, former jawan Surendra Ghule, 27, agreed with a smile and said, "Yes, it is nice when they come and visit us. Such events keep happening at the centre."

Ghule is one of the 91 former soldiers who live on the centre’s premises. Of the 91, 40 are quadriplegic while 51 are paraplegic. Ghule is the youngest and newest member at the centre. A native of Beed, Ghule was home for a break from his first posting in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir in 2015 when he sustained a spinal injury. The tyre of his motorbike burst and he rammed into a tractor.

With the help of the spirit instilled in them from the military, the PRC residents do everything from making parts for a United States of America-based company which further supplies it to Nasa, to making wireless communication devices, railway signal adaptors and running a call centre for subsidised air-ticketing for military personnel. "The centre has been providing assembled units to Nasa for the past 30 years. An American company provides raw material for it. This happens through the year, as per their orders," said Col BL Bhargav, admin officer at PRC.

The centre has also established a basketball team which has scored gold medals at various national and international tournaments.
