The complaint in the case was filed by the deceased woman's grandson, Mehul Nijwan, 21, who lives in Camp. Nair was a widow living alone in the house on the second floor of the building for the past few years, according to the neighbours.

The police claim that the missing jewellery was worth Rs.1,50,000. The woman was found with her throat slit, while there was no sign of disturbance in any part of the room or the house, according to police sub inspector Suresh Mane who was at the spot.

The woman lived in the area for the past eight years and her husband had died six years ago, according to neighbours.

“She always kept to herself and did not interact much with people in the society. We only smiled at each other when we met her during morning walks,” one woman, who lives in a neighbouring society in the area, says.

Senior police inspector Sangeeta Patil of Vishrantwadi police station is the investigating officer in the case. The incident is suspected to have happened between 3.45 pm and 10.30 pm on Saturday, according to the police.

The security guard on duty during those hours was called in for questioning by the police.

The deceased was taken to Sassoon General Hospital for post mortem on Saturday.
