A day after a gynaecologist was attacked at Pimpri-Chinchwad’s Municipal Corporation’s Yashwantrao Chavan Memorial Hospital (YCMH), the husband of the 25-year-old woman who delivered the stillborn baby, accused doctors of misleading them.
“The doctor informed us after two hours of delivery that the baby had died, though they had initially told us that the baby was healthy. It was a clear case of medical negligence on the part of the doctors at YCMH,” said Namdev Umap, a native of Ambejogai in Beed district.
The gynaecologist was assaulted by two female relatives of Umap’s wife Nilam, 25, whose baby was stillborn. Irked relatives created a ruckus, following which the doctors at YCMH went on a mass leave. Following the incident, police have booked Nilam’s mother Nirmala Magar and her brother-in-law Shivaji Magar under Maharashtra Medicare Service Persons and Institutions (Prevention of violence or damage or loss to property) Act 2010.
According to the hospital administration, the patient was admitted to the YCM hospital on Friday. On Saturday, at around 1.30 am, Nilam gave birth to a stillborn baby. As the relatives got to know about the development, members of Umap family tried to strangulate Dr Priyanka Pawar, 26, a gynaecologist.
“On Saturday night around 1.30 pm, my wife gave birth to a baby and the doctors also informed my mother-in-law that my wife has delivered a baby. However, at around 4.30 am, a doctor at YCM suddenly told us that baby had died. When my mother-in-law asked the doctor about it, they (hospital staff) said that the umbilical chord was wrapped around the throat of baby, due to which the baby had died,” said Umap.

{{/usCountry}}The relatives of the patient said that prior to the delivery, the doctors did not see an umbilical chord wrapped around the baby’s neck.
“Shocked after hearing the news , my mother-in-law broke down and asked the doctors for an explanation. It is not true that my mother-in-law or other relatives hit the doctors or heckled her,” said Umap. The doctors, however, refuted Umap’s claim. Dr Anil Roy, a medical officer at Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation’s health department, said, “The chord was wrapped around the throat of the baby which was not seen during sonography. After conveying the news to relatives, they became violent and assaulted the gynaecologist.”
On Sunday, the doctors at YCM discharged Nilam. According to Dr Anil Deshmukh, superintendent, YCMH, the doctors at the hospital tried their best. “Unfortunately, because of the fact that it was a stillbirth, we could not do anything,” said Deshmukh.
The hospital administration has filed a police complaint against the relatives of Umap. The hospital staff, which went on mass leave, also returned to work.
