The incident took place after two cops deployed at the police station allegedly misbehaved with and thrashed at least four members of the procession. A police vehicle was also vandalised in the incident after heavy police force was deployed in the area.

Senior police officials reached the spot and started investigating the matter. They pacified the protesters and transferred munshi Harbans Lal and sentry Gurcharan Singh to Police Lines.

A case was registered under Sections 353, 186, 427 and 149 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) against 150 unidentified people.

Master Feroze, who was part of the procession, claimed that when members of the Muslims were passing in front of the police station, physically challenged man Mohamad Dulare lost his balance and his stick fell on sentry Gurcharan Singh who was in an inebriated condition.

He alleged that the sentry started thrashing him, injuring him on the head and also fracturing his arm. When other people intervened, the sentry called munshi Harbans Lal and two cops thrashed four of them.

Assistant commissioner of police (ACP, east) Pawantjit said the munshi and sentry were transferred with an immediate effect and an inquiry has been marked.
