Efforts of the district administration to attract the youth to voting have yielded positive results as 35,746 new young voters have enrolled for the upcoming parliamentary elections.
The Election Commission of India had started a special campaign from January 6 to April 2 in throughout India. April 2 was last date for applying to register as new voters.
The special programme Systematic Voters Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) organised by the district administration in collaboration with city colleges resulted in the enrollment of 8,500 new voters directly.
Apart from SVEEP, the administration had also announced several other plans for motivating the youth to enroll themselves as voters.
First, it announced that the first-time voters will get a 20% discount in six restaurants after casting their vote on April 30, the day of voting. These restaurants are Headquarters, Sunny Side Up, Heat 7-New Jawahar Nagar, Heat 7 Buzz Urban Estate, Knicker Bocker and Vimpi near MBD mall.
Then, it came up with another idea to boost young electors to exercise their vote by announcing discount on purchase of mobile phones and related accessories.
The administration also launched a voting awareness drive ‘Wake up Jalandhar’ through social networking site Facebook to reach out to the youth and enroll more voters.
On January 6, 2014, the intensive summary revision of the revised voters’ list was published by
the district administration in which an addition of 72, 468 voters was made, taking the total voters enrolled in the district to 15, 13,660.
The district has around 15, 13,668 voters, including 7,24,180 females, out of the population of 23 lakh.With the addition of 35,746 new voters, the figure has reached 15,49,414.
Details gathered from the administration show that the Jalandhar (central) legislative assembly has attained the first place while the Shahkot assembly segment is on the last position in the Jalandhar parliamentary constituency, comprising nine legislative assembly segments.
Deputy commissioner Varun Roozam said the SVEEP programmes run at several colleges and other initiatives had been successful in attracting more people to register as voters in the district.
“The programmes have helped a lot in motivating the youth, especially in colleges, to register as voters. As a result, a large number of fresh voters have been registered,” the DC further said. He said these 35746 voters are those who were in the age group of 18 to 20.
