Some things are best eaten using forks and knives. Here’s a man who “ate” knives, and has lived to tell the tale. The 42-year-old Punjab police head constable says he had the “urge” to down these knives, which have now been surgically removed from his stomach.

A man lies under a table displaying the 40 knives removed from his stomach, in a hospital in Amritsar on Tuesday,. A team of two surgeons, two critical care physicians and an anaesthetist conducted the surgery during which they initially removed 28 knives and the rest after further investigation revealed 12 more, the hospital said. A team of five doctors carried out a five-hour surgery on the cop at a hospital here.

Jitendra Malhotra, managing director of Corporate Hospital, on Tuesday said the cop — who had reportedly been facing psychiatric problems for the past one year — had come to them complaining of stomach ache and weight loss.

“In the beginning, cancer was suspected but during investigation some hard metal substances were found inside the stomach that had damaged the liver, kidney and other organs,” added Malhotra, who led the surgery team. After the surgery, he is absolutely healthy, he added. He said the patient had told them that he always had an urge to eat knives and he ate them over a period of two months.
