Khaira accused the government of befooling the Punjabis over a resolution which has no legal bindings on others. He said chief minister Parkash Singh Badal should have brought a legislation in this regard.

He said, “Badals are claiming of making sacrifice for Punjab waters, but everything is just an eyewash. That’s what they have been doing for the past several years on the Sutlej-Yamuna Link (SYL) canal issue.”

Khaira said on February 20, 1978, Badal himself had issued a notification regarding the construction of the SYL canal and had given a commitment to construct the canal before September 1986. “70% of the canal was constructed under his regime in the state,” he added.

The AAP leader alleged that Badal had always raked up the SYL issue to gain political mileage and the resolution brought in the Vidhan Sabha by his government was a “classic example” in this regard.
