Delhi chief minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) convener Arvind Kejriwal on Tuesday said he was against the construction of Sutlej-Yamuna Link (SYL) Canal as the Punjab does not have enough water to share with other states.
Kejriwal said this while replying to a media query. He was here to meet environmentalist Balbir Singh Seechewal.
The statement holds significance as both the SAD and the Congress had been asking Kejriwal to explain his stand on SYL Canal.
“Kejriwal should tell Punjabis immediately whether he was standing with them in their hour of grave need or he would side with his parent state Haryana,” SAD general secretary Maheshinder Grewal had said recently.
Even Punjab Congress Chief Capt Amarinder Singh had targeted Kejriwal on the issue. “Kejriwal’s silence says he is still in a dilemma as he belongs to Haryana,” he had said.
However, political observers feel that Kejriwal’s support to Punjab over the water-sharing dispute is aimed at projecting AAP as a Pro-Punjab political outfit as it has high stakes in the assembly polls scheduled next year.
Meanwhile, Kejriwal took keen interest in Seechewal’s endeavours on environment protection. He also invited Seechewal to Delhi to help authorities clean the Yamuna.
