The Amritsar rural police have initiated a probe into the allegation levelled by the Punjab Mahila Congress against an ASI that he had torn a woman's clothes after she was summoned to a police post to bring medicines for husband, who had been put in the lock-up in connection with an NDPS case.
Members of the Punjab Mahila Congress, led by its vice-president Nimisha Mehta, staged a demonstration outside the Bundala police post on Thursday, seeking dismissal of the ASI and the suspension of the cops who allegedly forced the woman to go for a compromise.
Mehta said the woman had been summoned to the police post late on Wednesday night. "But the ASI stopped her on the way and tore her clothes. Her son was also bashed up after he protested against the insult meted out to his mother," said Mehta.
She said the victim then approached the police with a complaint against the accused, but she was asked to go for a compromise as "it would not be wise on her part to fight against the police. "We have approached the Amritsar rural SSP, seeking action against the accused cops," said Mehta.
Amritsar rural SSP Manmohan Singh said the matter had been brought to his notice. "The woman's husband was arrested on Wednesday night. This morning she approached us with a complaint that the ASI tore her clothes while she was on her way to the police post," he said.
