Amid uproar in the House over their anti-Badal remarks, Bains brothers—Balwinder Singh and Simarjeet Singh—on Wednesday quit the membership of the assembly by flinging their resignations towards the speaker’s chair. Both were elected to the Vidhan Sabha in 2012 as independent candidates.
The resignations were tactically timed as they tendered them after creating ruckus in the House over SYL issue, blaming the SAD-BJP government for inability to handle the issue properly, leading to adverse opinion from the Supreme Court.
Speaker Charanjit Singh Atwal rebuked the legislator brothers and issued directions not to bring on record their speeches, but that didn’t stop them from raising the voice. In the last session in September, the brothers were forcibly thrown out of the House for creating ruckus.
Earlier in the House, Simarjeet said he had raised the issue of seeking royalty for sharing river water with neighbouring states and even got the amount (`16-lakh crore) calculated from experts. “When I raised the issued, no one paid heed, now are you resorting to the same?” he said.

Jalandhar Cantonment MLA Pargat Singh, who quit Shiromani Akali Dal in September, also resigned as a legislator. He handed over his resignation to the speaker. “My resignation is in the wake of the Supreme Court’s judgment. Punjab is being discriminated against and attempts are being made to rob the state of its riparian rights,” he said.
