Facing starvation of funds to carry out development works, the Patiala Municipal Corporation has crossed hindrances in sale of its chunk of land worth more than 51 crores available adjacent to Division Number 2 police station of Patiala city.
The prime land of measurement 25 bigha and 6 biswan was lying vacant in the area some part of which was encroached upon by the police because of its proximity with the police station.
Since the police was not ready to leave the place and was claiming the registry of 6 biswan of land to its name, because of this dispute between the civic body and the police, the sale of land was not possible.
But now, as per corporation officials, after the civic body took up the matter with the Chief Secretary in a meeting held last month, the dispute was settled between the two parties in which the police was convinced to leave the place.
"Ever since I took up the office fifteen days back, the first thing I did was to speed up the process to sale of land. After rounds of meeting with the district officials, we were all set to sale this land now," Mayor Jaspal Pardhan told Hindustan Times.
After making all formalities, the corporation would hand the land to Punjab Urban Development Authority (PUDA) on the market rate which would develop the land for commercial purpose.

As per sources, the first thing, the corporation was also planning to do after receiving this amount was to repay the loan of amount Rs 10 crores raised under National Capital Region Planning Board (NCRPB) scheme in 2006. The civic body in last two years had received number of notices from the NCRPB to clear the loan.
"Apart from this loan clearance, rest of the money would be spent on development of city," the Mayor disclosed, who was pressing the civic body staff hard to implement the sale deed as soon as possible.
