The civic body will float tenders soon to invite an energy service or savings company (ESCO) to handle this project.

MC has identified more than one lakh points across the city where these LED lights will be installed replacing the old street lights. Though, the financial condition of MC is not good, the MC will do an agreement with an energy saving firm to install these LED lights.

MC will pay to the company concerned on monthly-basis up to seven years to complete the work.
At present, MC spends rs6-7 crore to pay electricity bill for the street lights every month. Earlier, sodium lamps, tube lights and metal halide (MH) lights were installed in various areas of the city, and these will be now replaced by LED Lights.

The MC officials had also conducted a meeting regarding installation of LED lights on Wednesday and also inspected the area from from Shaheed Karnail Singh Nagar to Jawaddi where LED street lights were installed around a year ago. The officials were satisfied with the functioning of these LED lights.
The MC officials are also planning to reduce the height of some old poles, so that LED lights can be installed on proper height.

City resident Gaganpreet Singh, who is an advocate, said, "It is a good and smart decision of the MC to save energy and money. The LED lights would also help to give a good look to the city areas during night time. I think the MC should also make efforts to install street lights that run on solar light system."
