With a majority of residents voting for integrated public transport and smart traffic management solutions as part of the pan city solutions under the Smart City project, the UT administration has already started working towards this direction. A high-level meeting was held to discuss the intelligent traffic solutions for the city.
In the meeting chaired by UT home secretary Anurag Agarwal, it was decided to come up with smart solutions to tackle traffic problem, besides law and order. It was also decided that the city would get more than 600 CCTV cameras. At present, there are 100 CCTV cameras in the city.
The home secretary also agreed that the present CCTV cameras in the city are hardly of any help and most of them are non-functional.
Agarwal said, “We intend to come up with smart CCTV cameras that will not only help in keeping vigil, but also help in nabbing criminals and traffic violators.” He added that the focus is on coming up with traffic solutions such as intelligent synchronised traffic lights.
“The CCTV cameras will be our focus. To see that the cameras are maintained properly after installation, the company being awarded the contract will be held responsible,” the home secretary added. There will be a provision of maintenance in the contract and payments will be made through instalments.

{{/usCountry}}The other main focus of the administration will be on e-governance in the city, under which delivery of various facilities and services to the city residents will be ensured in a smarter manner.
The CCTVs will have night vision cameras, ability to capture vehicle number plates. The cameras will also have technology such as face recognition and face matching. The sources in the police said the face recognition will help track criminals from among the crowds. For example, the CCTV installed on the traffic lights will be able to scan the face of any criminal and even traffic violators. After the installation of new cameras, the CCTV grab will be attached with the challan that is sent to the home of a defaulter.
