Kullu chief medical officer Baldev Thakur had initiated an inquiry after the kin of the deceased had alleged medical negligence. Thakur said there was no negligence by the hospital staff. He added that the family’s claim that trainee nurses had carried out the delivery was unfounded. “We never allow trainee nurses to carry out deliveries because there are not capable of handling such cases,” he said.

He said trainee nurses had to be assisted by seniors every time during the treatment of patients. “The accusations are not true,” he said. Expressing grief over the demise of the woman, he said it was unfortunate that they could not save the patient despite all efforts.

“There is a 15% chance of death in such cases,” he said. “She died due to complications after the delivery.”

Reena (33), a native of Bilaspur, was at her father’s house at Kullu for the past few days and was admitted to the hospital on January 10. She gave a birth to a child, but died two hours later.
