Senior Congress leader Harmandir Singh Gill on Friday flayed the mass transfers of doctors by the Punjab government, claiming that it had left a number of rural health centres without suitably qualified doctors or specialists.
Bringing this to the notice of chief medical officer (CMO) Dr Tejwant Singh here on Friday, Gill claimed that the primary health centres (PHCs) in Naushera Pannuan, Sarhali, Harike and Kairon had been left without qualified doctors or specialists in the wake of recent transfers. Health services in these places had been adversely affected and the public was the sufferers, he added.
Gill claimed that all five specialists posted at a particular PHC had been transferred, leaving its functioning in the hands of pharmacists. Likewise, three specialists posted at PHC Sarhali and two at Harike were transferred, jeopardising working at these two places. At the PHC Kairon, just one MBBS doctor was left while the specialists had been moved out, the Congress leader said.
He urged the CMO to immediately bring this to the notice of the state health department authorities. He pointed out that the Harike-Tarn Taran stretch of the highway was accident-prone zone and admistering first aid to accident victims in the absence of specialists would be difficult.
