Apparently encouraged by the Congress victory in Punjab, party workers in Capt Amarinder Singh’s ancestral village Mehraj in Bathinda district stormed the office of the panchayat and allegedly broke the nameplate of its president, an Akali leader, on Wednesday, the eve of his swearing-in as chief minister.

Harinder Singh, the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader who is president of the nagar panchayat, said that after breaking his nameplate, the workers told the officials that one Gurtej Singh will be the president now.

The Congress workers in large numbers had gone to the office of the panchayat to meet officials about civic issues faced by the residents. They first asked the officials to replace the photos of now-former chief minister Parkash Singh Badal with those of Amarinder, who had kicked off his poll campaign from here at a rally for Gurpreet Singh Kangar, who is now the MLA of Rampura Phul segment under which Mehraj falls.
