High drama witnessed as shopkeepers at Ghumar Mandi downed their shutters in protest after traffic cops tried to tow away the car of an NRI who had come for shopping on Friday.
Alleging that the traffic cops were only trying to meet their targets, the shopkeepers said that the NRI customer’s car was just inches away from the parking line. The protest continued for an hour and a half till senior police officials reached the spot and pacified the shopkeepers. The NRI customer identified as Sukhwinder Singh of Raikot said, “I had parked my car within the parking limits. The cops dragged my car outside the parking line with the tow away vehicle and then clicked pictures.”
He further added, “I reside in Canada, where the traffic rules are implemented more strictly. I am a law-abiding person.” Meanwhile, the shopkeepers said that as the festival season is around the corner, the market is witnessing a huge turnout of customers. ”But there are no proper parking arrangements in the market.
Pawan Batra, president of the Ghumar Mandi Market Association, said that they have asked the police to not challan or towing away vehicles till Diwali as it would cause losses in their business.

{{/usCountry}}Batra also complained about the one way road system. The traffic police had implemented one way system in the market from both points on rotation basis, which confuses the customers. Additional deputy commissioner of police (ADCP, traffic) Sukhpal Singh Brar said the shop owners should deploy guards to manage the traffic. He added that if the police stop challaning or towing away vehicles from market, it will become difficult to even walk in the market.”
Commissioner of police RN Dhoke said the police cannot allow people to violate the rules. The police will take action against violators.
